Roger and Maureen Gnerer began their ranching journey in Minnesota before moving to Montana in 1983 to pursue their dream of cattle ranching. With their children, they built a respected registered Black Angus program focused on quality genetics. After Roger’s passing in 2001, the family continued his legacy, now operating ranches across Montana.
Roger and Maureen Gnerer began their journey in St. Paul, Minnesota, where they met, married, and raised 13 children between 1961 and 1979. Through hard work and determination, they built a successful dairy farm in Wadena, MN, starting with just a few milk cows and growing into one of the most advanced dairy operations in the state.
In 1983, following Roger’s lifelong dream, the family sold the dairy and moved to Hammond, Montana, to begin a new chapter in cattle ranching. They expanded their operation to include sheep and leased land throughout the area, overcoming challenges like drought, fluctuating cattle prices, and grasshopper infestations.
Roger and his sons developed a strong interest in registered Black Angus cattle, drawn to their efficiency and adaptability in Montana’s rugged environment. The family began building their registered herd in the early 1990s, sourcing genetics from respected Angus programs across Montana and beyond. Their focus has always been on producing superior Angus cows with traits like fertility, docility, and profitability. Artificial insemination has been a key part of their program since 1990, helping accelerate genetic progress.
After Roger’s tragic passing in 2001, the family rallied to continue his legacy. Chris, the youngest son, returned home to help Maureen manage the ranch. Today, the Gnerer family operates across multiple locations in Montana:
